WAR? During Pride Month??????

The table is trashed...

Beautiful bodies, tousled and artfully covered in tableware, lay among dirty used glasses, dirty plates, ravaged food, cigarette butts and joints, crushed berries, tarot cards, empty wine and champagne bottles, lipstick tubes, protest signs, baskets of eggs..

They are tired, horny, angry, sad, scared, submissive, empowered, overwhelmed, uneasy, inspired. They form a tableau of the human emotions evoked by the current reign of political terror, the threat to to their very existence. The world is an ugly place that needs more beauty. Sometimes our very existence as Queer people feels dangerous and provocative. On what he knew would be hjs last human night on earth, Jesus gathered his friends close to eat and drink and celebrate. The last supper was not his last supper - he would be resurrected- but it was his last night of innocence and trust in his community. It was the last night before Judas, who he thought was his friend, betrayed him for a handful of gold coins. Capitalism really is the root of so many evils in this world. But on this night, this Last Supper, he was a human and he chose not to heal the sick or pray but to celebrate. Marcus Aurelius taught us Memento Mori - reminders of death help us live our best lives. How would you live if you knew you might die tomorrow? Or even that the whole world might change? Would you draw your love ones close and show them your truest most authentic self? Would you celebrate life or mourn death? And lastly, why oh why do we need to party? It’s the glue isn’t it? It’s the same thing that makes us love, screw, cry, fight, grow, make art. We do it because we have to. We do it because we can.

CELEBRATION is REBELLION

The Desert is a very special and magical place. I often refer to it by the title of a French surrealist film I saw in college, “the island of broken toys.”That doesn’t mean that we are not extremely fun to play with, but we are the Barbie doll who is more effective as a G.I. Joe . We are the basketball that wants to paint a mural. Not one of the talented artists involved in this process has ever remained in their lane. Not for even one second. That space to grow into the most authentic - that unexpected version of yourself that is both greater and more magnificent but also simpler and more pure, that is what makes the magic of the desert. I feel extremely lucky and privileged that my last supper, my vision of how I would choose to spend the end of the world as we know, it came to life with the help of my perfect bespoke, unique, broken toys. None of this beautiful art that you’ve witnessed would be possible without their creative input and their artistic talent. possible without their creative input and their artistic talent. No one in this group should ever question that they are a magical being or that they have the power to help people process their feelings that don’t fit neatly into a box of what is expected of them. A lot of people asked us why we were doing this? Is it for a brand? An event? There is no “why”, just like there is no one who is going to give you permission to create something that they don’t understand or have never seen them before. The permission to create already exists inside of you with the idea.  I personally believe that God or the universe or whatever you wanna call it does not give us dreams for ourselves that we are not capable of having.
